Cosplay

The word Cosplay is a combination of the words costume and play, and is now a common and quite acknowledged part of pop culture. Over the last few years, it has grown in popularity, and many people have built their livelihoods in connection with cosplay. The model gets paid by studios to recreate a certain character, share their work on social media, or visit an event. Tailors that sell specific patterns or even custom-made clothing, wig makers who build gravity-defeating wigs, prop makers that bring weapons or other magical items into this reality, or artists who specialize in special effects like contacts or teeth. There is even a world cosplay championship (WCC) where artists all over the world represent their country and have to compete in categories like best in armor, best in gimmicks/technology, and best performance.

Urban Exploring (coming soon!)

Visiting abandoned buildings and locations is called urban exploring. Those so-called lost places can be old ruins, factories, churches, even family houses, hospitals, hotels, shopping smalls or theme parks. Some of them are empty, nothing left to remind of the past, and some of them are completely furnished, looking like they expected to come back after lunch break. The community usually don't share locations openly, since beside respectful explorer, it attracts people vandalizing the place. So should you ever visit a lost place, please remember:
take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints
.

Sports

Buhurt, a historical medieval combat sport, is a modern take on medieval tournaments. The fights wear full body armor, those can be from different time periods and cultures, some are even inspired by fantasy worlds like The Lord of the Rings. Every fighter choose their own weaponry, from the classic falchion (a one-handed sword) paired with a shield, halberd, Lucerne hammers, aces or maces to Japanese blades like the shoto or daisho. The weapons are dull, but they get wielded with full force.

Inside the arena, the fighters face each other with the shared passion in different numbers. From 1 vs. 1 to the classic 5 vs. 5 up to 150 vs. 150, men and women fight each other with the goal of bringing their enemies to the ground. Outside the fight, they share stories about their pets, help each other repair their equipment for the next battle, and build friendships over language barriers and national borders. To be honest, I was surprised to find so many wonderful and kind people in a sport that seems to be that brutal. But this sportsmanship and fellowship with each other, and the heartwarming welcome to newcomers, is such a joy to witness. So if you have the chance to watch a tournament, please do so! Share their enthusiasm and celebrate this awesome sport.
